Some recent projects

Europe's Modern Architecture Mapped, Tagged, Rated and Commented!

Mimoa Well, MIMOA can almost do that. We (MIMOA, Acato and ...Movimiento) are working on version 0.8. The result of the first 7 or so iterations can already be seen. MIMOA got funded by the Digitale Pioneers. This organisation believes in Open source, I do to, for a lot of things. That is why you can download and read the UID documents that are published on the MIMOA blog (I love to install and style Wordpress!)

One touch control climate, audio and navigation

MimoaFor the Connaught Motor Company Movimiento designed a GUI to easily control Climate, MP3 and Navigation. Based on Flash 6 and Windows CE and with the hardware of Skyships, Connaught has a state of the art Climate Control, FM Radio, MP3 player, Handsfree Phone and navigation in their soon to be launched Type D GT. The visual design has been very nicely done by my partner, Acato. Soon more information on this site.

Who is Movimiento?

Movimiento is a one man company founded by Matthijs Collard.

Matthijs CollardI have a Master of Science in Industrial Design Engineering (Delft University of Technology). In my final two years I specialized in interaction design. Since 2003 I worked for several companies as a freelance designer. In 2005 I worked for Satama Interactive on a large Interactive TV related project. My graduation project was carried out at KPN Research, where I designed a highly innovative tool to realize interactive television programs. Besides working hard I like to play hard. I am a wave addict. Traveling the world to search for perfect conditions for surfing and windsurfing is what I do if I don''t work. Visit www.pk23.nl if you are interested in this part of me.

Skills

Concept Design

Innovative ideas can just pop up. But good ideas can also be generated by using creative thinking methods. The context around a good idea gets broader every second you think about it. What about the market, the competitors, technical issues, how are we going to develop this product? A good design process is half the work.

Skills & methods: creative thinking & brainstorming, market research, competitive product survey, Target group analysis, project planning.

Functional Design

Now we have a good idea, a promising concept, we must look in detail what the new product, or service can do. This provides us with an overview of all the aspects of the product that has to be designed. With a good functional design the technical development can start in this early stage. Efficiency rules.

Skills & methods: Use cases, Information flow diagrams, functional interaction diagrams, technical specifications, technical writing etc.

Interaction Design

Usually, the more functions are specified in the functional design, the more complicated it will be for the user to find and use all functions. How to create a natural dialog with the user, how to teach new functions.

Skills & methods: Flowcharts, story boards, wire frame design, screen flow diagrams

GUI Design

How does the interaction design translate into a (graphical) user interface? In this phase we design page lay-out, information presentation, use cues like buttons and visual aids. What colors do we use? What terminology?

Skills & methods: Ergonomics, Graphic design, terminology.

Prototyping

The best way to experience a new design is when you make a prototype. As realistic as possible as far as the design is developed. A prototype is a good way to show what the final result could be, and probably more important; actual users can be invited for different sort of tests, like a usability research.

Skills & methods: Prototyping with Macromedia Director and studio 2004. XHTML WAP pages for mobiles services.

Usability Research

Actually user testing (and with that prototyping) is not the last step in the process. It is a very use full eye opening method in every stage of the process. What do users really do? They use the product like you thought they would? Probably not. Watch, ask and learn.

Skills & methods: User testing, expert review/evaluation, pilot testing, reporting
